Tenerife. June 2003
A recent research by the GECA enterprise for the MAPA
together with Asprocan, shows the Canarian banana as
one of the best fruits to the Spanish population and
remarks its preference to common banana .The Spaniards
prefer the Canarian banana they all know the brand "Platano
de Canarias. The
average consume is a banana per day and it is mainly
bought by women over 25, usually at the supermarket.
This study was carried out by phone-calls to 1,200 individuals
aprox. and aged in between 16 to 65 in the Penninsula,
the Balear and Canary Islands and 1,200 individuals
in Portugakl (except the
Azor and Madeira Islands) same age segment.
Canarian banana Vs. Others
Fron the research, we may conclude that 81% of Spaniards
prefer the Canarian banana. About 72% admit to know
it, but only 1% mentions a determined brand. In Portugal
about 28% prefer common banana, since the production
in the Canaries is not well known, but 97% aprox of
Spaniards know about it.
Fruit Consume Habits.
Both in Spain and Portugal, practically the whole population
admit to buy desserts, including fruit on a regular
basis. The most usual ones are apples, bananas, pears
and oranges. The research reveals that apples and bananas
are the most usual on regular consume in both countries.
And they are bought practically along the whole year.
About 55% mention the banana spontaneously and 97% admit
to know "Platano de Canarias" as a brand vs.
33% in Portugal.
Spaniards in a 47% aprox. admit to consume a banana
per day, vs. 51% in Portugal, which is moreoften consumed.
In both countries, families point out the consume, mainly
at home, more than at work, restaurants or cafés.
The usual buyers are over 25 and are mainly women: they
are those who decide what to buy about 90% of times.
The bananas are usually bought at markets near the home
place, supermarkets and groceries.
Another interesting data to remark which has been definite
on this year´s campaign (Adivina, adivinanza....)
is that the banana consume starts and consolidates in
childhood, but decreases in teenagers, that is why it
is essential to educate on food habits since early childhood.
